2025 Female Stories about Supporting Menopause at Work

Jolene’s dedication extends beyond her flying responsibilities; she actively participates  in initiatives that support female pilots. As the former chair of the Female Pilot Advisory Group, and organiser of the Fly Pink campaign, she helps raise both awareness and funds for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

In addition to this, Jolene has recently embarked on a mission to raise awareness about menopause, having personally experienced peri-menopausal symptoms. She believes it is essential to break the stigma surrounding this natural stage of life, promoting open discussions and providing support for women undergoing similar experiences.

On Menopause at Work

Menopause affects all women. Cathay proudly supports women in aviation, both on the ground and in the air. Currently, women represent 8.3 per cent of our pilot ranks, compared to a global industry average of six percent, as of 2023, and our cabin crew comprises 80% females. Our working conditions create unique challenges when it comes to menopause, and to ensure a healthy and happy workforce, we must address all life stages, not just pregnancy. Menopause deserves the same recognition and celebration.

Her Story

I didn't realise that a hysterectomy instantly puts women into menopause. So, when my mom underwent a hysterectomy and expressed sadness while her doctor increased her hormone levels, it made me understand how important hormones are for our overall well-being. Years later, I had a 6hr conversation with a male captain discussing the benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and how it helps to have a baseline for your blood work. Since then, at age 35, I've received a comprehensive blood test every year through our company's medical plan. So when my LDL doubled and I experienced severe hot flashes and night sweats, I knew it was time to begin the HRT treatment.
